Leah Burton's and Noelle Hicks' Presentation on
Diversity Forms Basis of New CAI Guide
Our very own Leah K. Burton’s and Noelle Hicks’
presentation, in partnership with Wil Washington of Chadwick,
Washington, Moriarty, Elmore & Bunn, P.C., on “Overcoming Racism in
Community Associations” has formed the basis of Community Associations
Institute's new “Diverse and Inclusive Communities Guide” that will be
used as a resource for community associations across the United States.
This new guide highlights CAI’s commitment to
diversity in our communities across the country. The guide will bring a
positive impact to all community associations by offering tools and
resources managers and board members can use to diffuse potentially
volatile neighbor-to-neighbor harassment claims. It provides examples
of new policies communities can enact that will highlight their
commitment to diversity and nondiscrimination to their residents and
spotlights an equality pledge CAI encourages all communities to adopt
and practice.
At RMWBH, we are very proud of the work Leah and
Noelle have done in this critical area of POA law!
In addition to their work being featured in the
CAI's new “Diverse and Inclusive Communities Guide,” Leah and Noelle
will be presenting on this topic during the CAI Annual Conference &
Exposition from August 18-21, 2021 in Las Vegas. For more information and
to register to see Leah and Noelle present in person, please visit https://www.caionline.org/Events/2021Conference/Pages/default.aspx

May 2021 Legislative Update
By Paul Gaines
April saw the various committees around the
capitol kick into high gear. The committees are rapidly hearing,
considering, modifying and voting on whether to pass the many POA
related bills on to the full chamber for a vote. For this legislative
update, we will provide an update on the current status of each bill
and highlight the bills that are moving quickly through the committee
process.

Preparing for Disaster
By Teddy Holtz
Texas is no stranger to natural disasters. Over
the last 10 years, our state has faced drought, wildfires, tornados,
numerous floods and hurricanes, but this past February brought us
something almost none of us could have predicted, a long hard freeze that
devastated the state’s power grid and caused a tremendous amount of
property damage from the resulting burst pipes.

Governing Documents Hierarchy
and Interpretation
Plats, restrictive covenants, Bylaws, policies,
these are some of the many documents that make up the governing
documents of an association. But what document takes precedence over
the other and how are community managers and board members supposed to
interpret what each document is supposed to do?
Join Shareholder Cliff Davis of our Houston Office
as he breaks down the various types of documents found in associations,
the level of authority each document has in the association and how
board members and managers should read and possibly enforce each
document.

and David Yancy, President, Criterium Yancy, to clear up the

Holtz of our Houston Office as they offer tips and guidelines to help
your association prepare a disaster readiness plan, discuss insurance
