Overcoming Racism in Community Associations
November 18 @ 11:30 am - 12:30 pm
The history of community associations is not always filled with bright moments. Unfortunately, racism is woven into the fabric of community associations through not only discriminatory enforcement of restrictions, but oftentimes in the language of the restrictions themselves. Implicit bias exists – in corporate governance and in the mindset of the membership and board members. The question becomes: How can managers and board members serve as agents of change?
Join Shareholder Leah K. Burton of our San Antonio Office and Associate Noelle Hicks of our Houston Office as they discuss combating racism and implicit bias in communities. Leah will discuss the seminal case which led to the amendment of HUD’s fair housing regulations to include a rule against “hostile environment” harassment. Leah and Noelle will also discuss best practices managers and board members can use to tackle racism in their communities and effect positive change.
